No one can deny the importance of open spaces in urban landscapes. A landscape that is riddled with concrete, cement, and bricks can easily enjoy the perks of breathable open spaces that offer a high quality of life.

What are Open Spaces?

Despite what its name stands for, open spaces are those areas of land that are either underdeveloped or lightly developed. However,  this land is not available for agricultural, industrial, or recreational purposes.

Open spaces in an urban landscape can have various owners. They can be owned by the government, provide individual, industrial moguls, or for institutional capacities.

Here are some of the most commonly found open spaces in the urban landscape that you need to know about:

  • Urban Parks and Playgrounds
  • Green Belts
  • Forest Land
  • Undeveloped Beaches
  • National Parks and Preserves
  • Areas Surrounding Lakes

One of the most important things that people need to understand about open spaces is that they are mostly defined by the areas that they are surrounding. Their surroundings are what define their purpose and use and help to better craft use for those land areas.

For example, a land area will only be defined as an open space if the area is surrounded by a developed area or has something structural in its nearby premises. Just a piece of land that does not have any other establishment nearby and is underdeveloped or slightly developed is not considered an open space.

But under some circumstances, the historically accurate sites are considered both a heritage and an open space.

What are the Types of Open Spaces?

As we have discussed above there are some open spaces in cities that are considered open spaces because they fulfill the definition of the open space in every possible context.

Urban Parks and Playgrounds

One of the biggest signs of a sustainable city is the presence of urban parks and playgrounds. In addition to parks and playgrounds other thing that a marker of eco-friendly establishments are as follows:

  • Public Gardens
  • Landscaped Boulevards
  • Waterfront Promenades

Cities that have these sorts of open areas are considered to be at the forefront of a sustainable environment and are often deemed as the perfect solution to the urban population and pollution issues. That is mainly because of the fact that these open spaces are accounting for the prospects of better health and spirits. These areas are what promise the residents a better chance of connecting with nature.

The presence of these natural spaces inside the urban landscape is what enhances the chances of:

  • Community Engagement
  • Educational Opportunities
  • Expansion of Green Infrastructure
  • Elevates the Property Prices
  • Redefine the Civic Culture

Green Belts

People tend to think that green belts are just those areas that are dividing the roads into two different roads. However, the purpose of the green belt is much wider and diverse. The green belts are the ones that are responsible for canceling the excruciating noises from the atmosphere and for regulating the temperature in the areas.

Another purpose of green belts which is rather underrated is the use of them to control and maintain the urban sprawl. Urban sprawl is one of the deadliest things to ever occur in an urban landscape.

Recent real estate establishments such as Hateem City Multan and various other projects are incorporating green belts in the infrastructure because they enhance the overall aesthetic of society and promote a better residential experience.

Forest Land

Another green space that is an important element of the urban landscape is forest land. Forest land is the area which is dedicated to the development and maintenance of forests. A forest is a place that is dominated by the presence of trees and the biodiversity that is endemic to that specific area.

Forests are important for the green infrastructure of any city and play a key role in defining the environmental status of the area. That is why there is an uproaring emphasis on the development of various forests and their upkeep in modern times.

Undeveloped Beaches

Pakistan is a country that is blessed with the presence of all sorts of weather and of course a coastline that stretches from Sindh to Balochistan. This coastline is 1050 km in length and is the place that hosts a number of beaches in Pakistan. These public beaches offer comfort, a chance to indulge in social life, and a community gathering experience like no other.

But recent human activities and the way people are unaware of their carbon footprint are wreaking havoc on these beaches. That is why the government is issuing various guidelines so that people can understand how to keep the beaches clean after their visits or even during the visits. Because we are able to keep these spaces clean the future of marine tourism in Pakistan is bright.

The Bottom Line!

Hence with the incorporation of open spaces in urban landscape, real estate can become a sustainable and eco-friendly industry with a reduced carbon footprint.
